Sudan Vows to Eliminate RSF in Darfur

(MENAFN) Sudan has reaffirmed its determination to defeat the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the conflict-ridden western Darfur area.

The nation's leadership emphasized its ongoing military commitment to reclaim the region and resist the RSF’s advances.

"We renew our commitment to the martyrs to continue confronting and defeating the rebel militia (RSF) and foreign mercenaries until every inch of Darfur is liberated,” declared Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chief of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council.

These remarks were delivered during al-Burhan’s recent visit to Wad Al-Noora, a village located in the central Gezira state.

The visit took place on Tuesday and came in the aftermath of a massacre allegedly executed by the RSF in June 2024, as reported by an official news outlet.

Al-Burhan affirmed that the national army would not surrender its arms “until this rebellion and brutal aggression are eradicated.”

He added that the visit was in line with a prior pledge to the wounded in the area and served as a moral obligation to offer solace to the bereaved families of those killed.

On June 7, 2024, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the RSF of perpetrating the massacre in Wad Al-Noora, claiming the lives of 180 non-combatants.

However, the paramilitary faction has persistently rejected allegations of targeting civilians in such incidents.

The Sudanese military declared full dominance over Gezira State in March, nearly twelve months after the RSF had taken control of the region.

The country has been mired in a violent struggle between the regular army and the RSF since April 2023.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 20,000 individuals and the forced displacement of 14 million people, according to figures from the United Nations and local governing bodies.

In contrast, academic research conducted by institutions in the United States places the estimated death toll at approximately 130,000.
